She spent her final moments well taken care of at the Royal Victoria Hospital’s palliative care wing, hands held on either side by her niece and nephew.

Karen was born in Westmount and lived out most of her early years in Verdun. When she grew up, her adventurous spirit led her to venture out West where she worked as a stable hand and bartender on a ranch in Alberta. There, she fell in love with all of the animals that called the ranch home but none more so than her favourite horse Midnight and a duo of pigs named after Cheech and Chong. Her spirit also led her out East where she resided in a small fishing village in Newfoundland called Caplin Cove; she spoke fondly and often of returning there someday. She experienced so many beautiful sights across Canada and left pieces of her heart scattered across the country but, in the end she was drawn back home, to the sight of the Saint Lawrence River, and set down roots in Lasalle.

Karen was passionate about learning and an advocate for education. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Concordia as well as a degree in Women’s Studies at their Simone de Beauvoir Institute. Post graduation, her living room continued to be piled sky-high with books to further deepen her understanding of her fellow humans. She was always curious, always hungry for more knowledge, and never stopped learning.

She believed strongly in giving back to your community, even when you may not have much yourself. She was a life-long volunteer at many establishments in the Lasalle area including the Douglas, the Montreal General, and the SPCA just to name a few. She was also an established presence at her local community center, Centre culturel et communautaire Henri-Lemieux. She spent many a senior lunch at their Centre de Vieux Moulin and enjoyed participating in their monthly conversational group to debate politics. She became well-known for her green thumb and her involvement in the community garden. She lived to nurture and champion those that were voiceless, including plants but especially animals; her childhood dog Xanadu forever held a special place in her heart.

She was an artist, a painter and a nature lover. She was incredibly thoughtful and sentimental. She wrote poems, songs and one of her fondest hobbies was singing in a choir. She was kind, generous and tried to meet everyone with an optimistic attitude. She was one heck of a cook. She saw and accepted you for who you were, without judgement – but, she also wasn’t afraid to tell it like it is. She was unique, kooky and playful. She could chat your ear off if you let her, but above all, she loved openly, deeply and without hesitation. She gave her affection freely in the form of kisses and hugs. She was a beautiful person inside and out and she will be missed dearly by her family, her friends, her community, and everyone lucky enough to have known her.

A celebration of life will take place on May 23, 2026 at 10:30 am at St. John Brébeuf Church (7777 George St., Lasalle, Québec, H8P 1C8).
